Going Keto: What You Need to Know Before Diving In

Posted on January 29, 2025 by Emily Davies

The ketogenic diet, or keto for short, has become increasingly popular in recent years as a way to lose weight and improve overall health. But before diving headfirst into this low-carb, high-fat diet, there are some important things you need to know.

First and foremost, it’s essential to understand the basics of the ketogenic diet. The primary goal of keto is to put your body into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. This is achieved by drastically reducing your intake of carbs and increasing your consumption of fats. Typically, a keto diet consists of about 70-75% fat, 20-25% protein, and only 5-10% carbs.

While the idea of eating more fat may sound appealing to some, it’s important to remember that not all fats are created equal. Healthy fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are recommended on the keto diet, while processed or unhealthy fats should be avoided.

Another key component of the ketogenic diet is monitoring your intake of protein. Consuming too much protein can actually hinder your body’s ability to enter ketosis, so it’s important to strike the right balance between fats and proteins.

One of the biggest challenges of going keto is dealing with the dreaded “keto flu.” When you first start the diet, you may experience symptoms like fatigue, headaches, irritability, and constipation as your body adjusts to using fat for fuel instead of carbs. This can be a tough hurdle to overcome, but many people find that once they get through this initial phase, they feel more energetic and focused than ever before.

It’s also important to note that the ketogenic diet is not suitable for everyone. If you have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or kidney disease, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider before starting the keto diet.

In addition, it’s crucial to listen to your body and pay attention to how you feel while on the diet. If you’re experiencing negative side effects like extreme fatigue, dizziness, or mood swings, it may be a sign that the ketogenic diet is not the right fit for you.

Before diving into the world of keto, be sure to do your research, consult with a healthcare provider, and listen to your body. While the ketogenic diet can be an effective way to lose weight and improve your health, it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach, and it’s important to approach it with caution and mindfulness.
