The Keto Diet: What You Need to Know Before You Start

Posted on July 7, 2024 by Emily Davies

The Keto diet has been gaining popularity in recent years as a trendy way to lose weight and improve overall health. However, before you jump on the Keto bandwagon, there are a few things you need to know in order to ensure you are making the right decision for your body and lifestyle.

The Keto diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that aims to put your body into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. In order to achieve ketosis, you must drastically reduce your carbohydrate intake to around 20-50 grams per day and increase your fat intake to around 70-75% of your daily calories. Protein intake should be moderate, making up around 20-25% of your daily calories.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Keto diet is that it is a free pass to eat all the bacon, butter, and cheese you want. While these foods are allowed on the diet, it is important to focus on consuming healthy fats, such as avocados, olive oil, and nuts, in order to support overall health. Additionally, it is essential to consume an adequate amount of non-starchy vegetables to ensure you are getting all the necessary nutrients your body needs.

Another important thing to consider before starting the Keto diet is the potential side effects. Many people experience what is commonly referred to as the “Keto flu” in the first few weeks of the diet, as their bodies adjust to burning fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. Symptoms may include fatigue, headaches, nausea, and irritability. It is important to stay hydrated and consume electrolytes to help alleviate these symptoms.

It is also important to understand that the Keto diet may not be suitable for everyone. People with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or kidney disease, should consult with a healthcare provider before starting the diet. Additionally, athletes and individuals who engage in high-intensity exercise may find that their performance suffers on the Keto diet, as carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of fuel for intense physical activity.

Ultimately, the decision to start the Keto diet is a personal one that should be made after careful consideration of your own health and lifestyle. While many people have found success with the Keto diet in terms of weight loss and improved energy levels, it is important to listen to your body and make adjustments as needed. If you are unsure if the Keto diet is right for you, consider consulting with a registered dietitian or nutritionist to help you make an informed decision.
