The primary mechanism behind ketosis is the restriction of carbohydrates. When carbohydrates are limited, the body is forced to turn to its stored fat for fuel, resulting in weight loss. Additionally, ketones are a more efficient energy source than glucose, the primary source of energy for the body when on a standard western diet. This leads to increased energy levels and improved cognitive function.

The keto diet typically consists of high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carbohydrate foods. Foods such as meats, fatty fish, eggs, dairy products, nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil are staples of the diet, while high-carb foods like grains, fruits, and sugary snacks are restricted.

While the keto diet can be effective for weight loss and energy enhancement, it is important to note that it may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or kidney disease, should consult with a healthcare provider before starting the diet. Additionally, some people may experience side effects in the initial stages of the diet, such as fatigue, constipation, or bad breath, known as the “keto flu.” These symptoms usually subside as the body adjusts to the new way of eating.
